Veg Out & About: Sweet Freedom Bakery

Veg Out & About is a column by Carissa Brones about vegan eats around Philly.
Welcome to the first installment of “Veg Out & About”, your guide to vegan eats around Philly! My grand opening called for something sweet from Sweet Freedom Bakery, a bakery specializing in vegan desserts.  This award-winning bakery pulls off delicious plant-based desserts and has even been featured on Food Network’s Cupcake Wars! I headed down to South Street to visit the shop, and here’s my verdict…

All their desserts are made kosher and free of gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, corn, peanut, and refined-sugar. Without all those staples of conventional sweets, you’d wonder what they actually use to bake.  The long answer can be found on their website, but in short they only use wholesome unprocessed ingredients, meaning eating one of their cupcakes is the equivalent of having a green salad (well, almost).
I ordered their signature samoa cupcake, a magic bar, and threw in a s’mores cupcake that just looked too delicious to resist.
The magic bar was indeed pretty magical, featuring a generous crunchy top layer of toasted coconut flakes. While the cake of the samoa cupcake tasted a bit too all-natural (if you know what I mean), the incredible frosting and chocolate center certainly justified the cupcake’s fame.  The samoa cupcake may be the bakery’s signature item, but the wild card s’mores cupcake really surprised me the most! It was delectable and true to its name, complete with a bottom graham cracker crust.
This health-ified bakery definitely occupies a delicious niche. I’d return for another round of tasting (gotta try those pumpkin donuts and banana cookies!), but I’d recommend sticking to the chocolate desserts for any skeptical non-vegans.
