Pleased to Meet You!

diana-bayless_headshot Hello! My name is Diana, and I am Philadelphia’s newest resident. Originally from Oklahoma, I lived on the West coast the past 9 years (Portland, Oregon then Long Beach, California) before finally taking the plunge in late March by quitting my job, downsizing my things, and buying a one-way flight to the vibrant city of Philadelphia on the East coast where I’ve always felt I belonged. What can I say? I’m a risk taker, just like my British grandmother who up and moved to Australia for nearly three decades.

While I’ve always been an avid and experimental cook, exploring restaurants in these different regions has really opened my eyes even wider. In the places I’ve known and lived, I’ve come to appreciate all kinds of food. It’s fascinating to me how differently one cuisine can be interpreted in various areas of the same nation.

So, here I am, ready to start experiencing all the great food Philly has to offer. And since I’m new here and am well aware that it is you, the readers of Penn Appetit, who are the real food-loving experts of the area; I’m hoping you’ll not only help lead me to the right places but interact with me so we can have lively conversation about what we all love: Food.

In the next five blog entries I’ll be contributing here, I’ll review a place that serves one of my favorite dishes. And those places will be decided by you, my new friends who know Philly’s food scene.

To kick it off: Let’s talk sushi!

The winning answer will be the one I review. Thank you, in advance, for your input and participation!

It’s a pleasure to meet you.

Your new food-loving friend,

  1. So, a new friend just recommended his favorite spot – though it’s not technically in Philadelphia. It’s called Sagami, and it’s just outside Camden. What’s the verdict here on restaurants outside of Philly proper but still so close? Are readers interested in the surrounding areas? Let me know your thoughts!

  2. Hi, friends!

Wellllllll… this poll idea didn’t really work out the way I anticipated! I’m laughing at the majority of “other” votes and at how darn close the results were. A huge thanks to those who voted!

    Here’s where we landed:
    Vic Sushi Bar – 3
    Tomo Sushi & Sashimi – 2
    Morimoto – 2
    Fat Salmon – 2
    Double Knot – 2
    1225Raw Sushi and Sake Lounge – 1
    Izumi – 1
    Sagami – 1

So with that: I suppose Vic Sushi Bar barely beat out all the others and is the official winner. However, I love sushi; and I don’t mind giving a few of those “others” a try. Stay tuned!
