Chow Now: Shrimp Tempura at Tokyo Hibachi and Sushi

Nestled at the heart of center city, Tokyo Hibachi and Sushi is renowned for…well, Hibachi and Sushi. However, if you are not in the mood for a full-blown, clap-worthy teppanyaki show, and want something besides the most common alternative—sushi, Tokyo offers various other noteworthy options.

The best option for me? Shrimp Tempura. This sizzling dish featured a heaping pile of deep-fried shrimp and vegetables—but it wasn’t your typical Southern grandma’s deep fried dish. The vegetables and shrimp were coated in a light, airy batter. Each crunchy bite crumbled in my mouth graciously, without leaving my mouth feeling the least bit greasy. The vegetables in this dish are not your typical day-to-day vegetables. Tokyo’s exotic twist on this dish features sweet potatoes, cassava root, and other starchy delights thinly sliced for optimum crunchiness. So CHOW on this dish NOW, but make sure to bring friends along, or at least a voracious appetite (like I did), because the Tempura servings are generous.
